Tesla has added a new recall notice for certain 2026 Model Y vehicles that may have been delivered with reverse lamps that do not illuminate in reverse, creating a noncompliance with federal lighting rules and prompting a no-cost inspection and repair program.
What Tesla says changed
Tesla’s support page says the company issued a voluntary recall for certain model year 2026 Model Y vehicles manufactured between February 6, 2025, and July 26, 2025. The issue, according to Tesla, is that one or both reverse lamps may fail to switch on when the driver selects reverse, creating a noncompliance with FMVSS 108.
Why it matters
Reverse lamps are a basic safety and signaling feature, especially in low-light parking and driveway situations. Tesla says affected vehicles can still back up using the rearview mirrors and rear camera, and that a reverse warning sound alerts people nearby, but the company also notes that the missing lamp function can increase collision risk when the car is in reverse.
How the remedy works
Tesla says the fix will be completed at no charge to owners and will take about 20 minutes. The company says service centers will inspect the reverse lamp housing and reverse facia harness, then repair or replace parts if needed. Tesla is directing owners to schedule the work through the Tesla app under the recall repair flow.
What is still unclear
Tesla’s support page does not say how many vehicles are included in the recall, and it does not provide a broader production estimate. The company also does not discuss whether the defect was found internally, through customer reports, or through regulatory review. Those details may emerge if Tesla or regulators publish a formal recall filing or safety notice.
