Tesla said on Monday that it has voluntarily recalled certain older Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y vehicles equipped with Autosteer, saying a firmware update is needed to address driver-misuse risks and bring the affected vehicles back into compliance.
What Tesla said
In a support notice posted by Tesla, the company said the recall covers certain Model S vehicles built between October 5, 2012, and December 7, 2023, along with Model X vehicles from 2016 through 2023, Model 3 vehicles from 2017 through 2023 and Model Y vehicles from 2020 through 2023 that are equipped with Autosteer. Tesla said the remedy is a software update, rather than a service-center repair.
Tesla’s recall language says the update is meant to prevent misuse of Autosteer. The company also frames the action as voluntary, which suggests Tesla is treating the issue as a compliance and safety matter rather than a hardware defect.
Why it matters
The recall is notable because it reaches a large slice of Tesla’s older fleet and touches one of the company’s best-known driver-assistance features. Even when the fix is only software-based, recalls can affect owner confidence, regulatory scrutiny and the timing of feature updates.
Tesla’s support site also points owners to its recall information resources, indicating the company is routing affected vehicles through its existing over-the-air update process. That can reduce friction for owners, but it also means Tesla has to make the software remedy robust enough to satisfy regulators and close the recall cleanly.
What is still unclear
Tesla’s support notice does not, by itself, show the size of the affected fleet or the precise regulatory filing that triggered the action. Those details may appear separately in government records or a formal company filing.
The company also has not said in the support notice whether the recall is linked to any recent incident pattern or to a broader review of Autosteer behavior. For now, the direct evidence is limited to Tesla’s own recall page and its general recall information page.
